Gampaha District, Administrative district in Western Province, Sri Lanka
Gampaha District is an administrative region in the Western Province situated between two major rivers and extending to the Indian Ocean coast. The area includes multiple administrative divisions with the town of Gampaha serving as the main administrative center and Negombo functioning as the commercial hub.
The district was established in 1978 when authorities separated the northern portion of Colombo District to create an independent administrative region. This separation allowed for better regional governance of the rapidly growing suburban area.
Daily life revolves around fishing communities, rice farming, and local trades that shape the rhythm along the coast and inland areas. Temples and churches serve as gathering places where residents practice their faith and maintain local customs.
The region is easy to explore with Gampaha and Negombo serving as convenient starting points with good transport links. The flat terrain and road network make getting around straightforward and accessible.
Negombo is known for its busy fish market where local fishermen display and sell their daily catches from the ocean. The beach draws visitors curious about the maritime way of life and the daily work of fishing communities.
