Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, International airport in Hambantota, Sri Lanka
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is a facility in Hambantota, Sri Lanka, with a runway designed to handle wide-body jets. The terminal building offers check-in counters, processing areas, and facilities for both international and domestic connections.
Work began in late 2009 with funding mainly provided through Chinese government loans. The site was relocated from Weerawila to Mattala, requiring additional clearing of forested areas.
The area around the terminal once served as a corridor for elephant herds moving between forests, a fact still visible in the way roads and fences are arranged today. Local communities adapted to the changes brought by construction, finding new ways to coexist with wildlife movements.
Travelers should allow extra time for arrival and security checks, as the facility is located away from major towns. The complex is equipped for wheelchair access, and signage helps with navigation inside the terminal.
A few years after opening, the site became known for low passenger traffic, leading to discussions about alternative uses for parts of the grounds. Some areas were temporarily used for storage purposes and even as a location for pilot projects in agriculture.
