Biyagama Water Treatment Plant, Water treatment plant in Biyagama, Sri Lanka
The Biyagama Water Treatment Plant is an industrial water purification facility in Sri Lanka that draws water from the Kelani River. The facility moves water through intake structures, mixing chambers, and filtration systems to produce treated drinking water for distribution across the region.
The plant was built between 2008 and 2013 and began operating following its official opening. It was established as an important step to improve the water supply for the surrounding region.
The facility supports public health initiatives by providing clean water to one million residents across multiple districts, including Wattala, Ja-Ela, and Kelaniya.
The facility operates with multiple quality control systems to maintain safe drinking water standards and minimize losses during processing. Visitors should know that this is an active industrial operation and public access may be restricted.
An expansion project, the Kelani Right Bank Water Supply Project Phase 2, will increase the plant's production capacity to 360,000 cubic meters per day.
