Morača, River in Montenegro
The Morača is a river in Montenegro that flows approximately 100 kilometers from the Mount Rzača area to Lake Skadar. Along its course, it cuts deep canyons through the landscape and creates striking geological formations.
The river gained importance in 1252 when a local ruler established the Morača monastery on the northern side of the canyon. This monastery later became a significant religious and cultural center in the region.
The river shapes Montenegro's natural identity and flows through Podgorica, where it continues to influence local life. Communities along its banks have maintained a long relationship with the water, reflecting their dependence on its resources.
The river is easiest to view along the European Route E65, which runs through the canyon connecting Kolašin to Podgorica. The drive through mountainous terrain takes around two hours and offers several viewpoints of the river.
The water remains drinkable from Mount Rzača to the lake mouth and supports three different trout species. This purity makes it an uncommon natural ecosystem for the European continent.
