Bukumirsko jezero, Glacial lake in Kučke Planine, Montenegro
Bukumirsko jezero is a glacial mountain lake in the Kučke Planine that measures about 210 meters long and 130 meters wide. The water reaches depths between 13 and 16 meters and sits at an elevation near 1,448 meters.
The lake formed through glacial processes during the ice age, which carved deep basins into the mountains. The surrounding landscape with its two distinctive peaks has shaped this region since the ice melted.
The lake connects to Marko Miljanov Popović, a leader from the Kuči tribe whose legacy shaped the region in the 1800s. Local people view this spot as part of their heritage and identity.
You can reach the lake via a road from katun Mokro to Brskut, with the northern shore being rocky while the southern edge has gentler slopes. Bring sturdy footwear since the approach and surroundings can be challenging.
The lake is home to an endemic newt species called Tritus alpestris montenegrinus, which locals sometimes describe as resembling tiny crocodiles. These small amphibians are difficult to spot, but visitors might catch glimpses of them in the shallow shoreline areas.
