Gao Region, Administrative region in northeastern Mali
The Gao Region extends across 89,532 square kilometers of territory bordered by Niger and Burkina Faso to the south, with the Niger River flowing through its lands.
The region underwent territorial changes in 1991 when its northern section separated to form the Kidal Region, altering the administrative boundaries of northern Mali.
The population of Gao Region includes Songhai, Bozo, Tuareg, Bambara, and Kounta ethnic groups, each maintaining their specific traditions and social structures.
The region divides into three administrative cercles - Ansongo, Bourem, and Gao - with the city of Gao serving as the regional capital and main transportation hub.
The Niger River floods reach their maximum level later in Gao compared to upstream locations, creating specific agricultural conditions for local food production.
