Mount Hombori, Mountain range in Mopti Region, Mali.
Mount Hombori is a sedimentary rock formation in the Mopti Region of Mali, rising steeply from the flat Sahel plain to a height of around 1,150 meters (3,773 feet). The top flattens into a broad plateau that looks out over a wide stretch of dry savanna and sand.
Caves around the mountain contain archaeological traces pointing to human presence going back over 2,000 years. The rock offered shelter and a defensible living space through many centuries of life in the Sahel.
The Dogon communities living here for centuries have maintained their traditional ways and expect visitors to respect local customs before attempting the ascent. Climbing is not just a physical challenge but an interaction with the people who inhabit these lands.
Climbing the mountain requires technical skills and proper gear, so preparation before arrival is strongly advised. The months from October to March bring cooler temperatures that make the ascent far more manageable than the hot season.
The summit plateau supports around 150 plant species and marks the northernmost point where a particular tropical tree species grows in this part of Africa. This shows how different climate zones meet at this spot, creating a natural diversity that is hard to expect in the Sahel.
