Kyaikkhauk Pagoda, Buddhist pagoda in Thanlyin, Myanmar
Kyaikkhauk Pagoda sits on Hlaingpotkon Hill with a Mon-style stupa at its center and four broad staircases climbing up from different sides. The stone structure is carefully maintained and invites visitors to walk around and observe its traditional design.
The site was founded roughly 2000 years ago and ranks among the oldest religious structures in this part of Myanmar. Over the centuries it has sheltered many people and remains important to the surrounding community.
During the annual festival in February, Buddhist devotees gather at the pagoda to participate in traditional ceremonies during the Burmese month of Tabodwe.
The site sits on elevated ground that once provided shelter for nearby residents during natural disasters. The higher position offers good views of the surrounding landscape and areas below.
The Myanmar Times documented renovation plans for the Kyaikkhauk Pagoda in 2011, marking a new phase in the preservation of this religious monument.
