Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park

The national park contains the dormant Khorgo volcano with its 180-meter-wide crater, surrounded by extensive lava fields and the Terkhiin Tsagaan lake.

The Khorgo volcano last erupted 8,000 years ago, creating a natural dam that formed the current Terkhiin Tsagaan lake, measuring 16 kilometers in length.

Local inhabitants refer to the solidified lava formations as basalt yurts, reflecting the traditional Mongolian nomadic housing structures in their geological observations.

The park sits at altitudes between 2,100 and 2,500 meters, requiring visitors to prepare for significant elevation changes during their exploration activities.

Steam rising from the crater walls creates winter ice formations that appear like scattered sheep across the mountainside when viewed from a distance.
