Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park, Protected volcanic area and lake system in Arkhangai Province, Mongolia
Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park is a protected volcanic landscape in Arkhangai Province with a dormant cone and large lake basin. The terrain combines dark lava formations, patches of birch forest, and open grassland surrounding the blue water body.
The Khorgo volcano erupted approximately 8,000 years ago, leaving behind solidified lava that naturally dammed water flow. This geological event directly resulted in the formation of the lake that exists today.
Local inhabitants refer to the solidified lava formations as basalt yurts, reflecting the traditional Mongolian nomadic housing structures in their geological observations.
The park sits at elevations between 2,100 and 2,500 meters, requiring physical preparation and proper gear for exploration. Visitors should expect changing weather conditions and varied terrain throughout their visit.
During colder months, ice formations appear on the crater walls that resemble scattered sheep when viewed from a distance. This seasonal effect is created by steam rising from within the dormant volcano.
