Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve

The 66,000-hectare reserve features rocky outcrops, dry grasslands, and semi-desert steppe terrain at an elevation of 2,200 meters above sea level.

Established in 1996, the reserve contains numerous ancient burial mounds and Tibetan petroglyphs that document the historical presence of past civilizations.

Ten nomadic herder families maintain their traditional way of life within the reserve, integrating their winter corrals into the red cliffs.

The reserve lies 300 kilometers southeast of Ulaanbaatar and requires advance planning as no visitor facilities are available in this remote location.

Three natural springs, including one at Khalzan Uul mountain, sustain wildlife populations of argali sheep, ibexes, gazelles, and black vultures.
