Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve is a protected area featuring rocky outcrops, dry grasslands, and semi-desert steppe spread across roughly 66,000 hectares at an elevation of 2,200 meters. Red cliffs dominate the landscape while open plains with sparse vegetation surround the terrain.
The reserve was established in 1996 to protect this historically important landscape and its archaeological finds. Numerous ancient burial mounds and Tibetan petroglyphs throughout the area document the civilizations that inhabited these lands across centuries.
Ten nomadic herder families maintain their traditional way of life here, using the red cliffs as natural shelter for their winter camps. Their daily routines are closely tied to the land's seasons and rhythms, which visitors can observe firsthand.
The area lies about 300 kilometers southeast of Ulaanbaatar and requires careful planning for a visit. Since no visitor facilities exist on site, you need to bring your own water, food, and arrange accommodation independently.
Three natural springs sustain wildlife populations in the area, including one at Khalzan Uul mountain. These water sources support argali sheep, ibexes, gazelles, and black vultures that have adapted to the harsh conditions here.
