Rumah Warisan Haji Su is a residence complex featuring two traditional houses built from chengal hardwood with seventy windows and twelve large doors. These numerous openings provide natural ventilation throughout the structure.
The complex was built in the 1850s as the residence of shipping magnate Haji Su Mohammed Salleh, who operated vessels between Southern Thailand and Singapore. His maritime trade shaped commercial connections in the region during that period.
The three-tiered gable design and construction methods that avoid nails showcase traditional Malay craftsmanship techniques still visible in the structure. These building methods allow visitors to understand the skill of the craftspeople from that era.
The site is located approximately two kilometers from downtown Kuala Terengganu and opened to visitors in 2016 following a restoration by the State Museum Board. You can easily walk through the houses and examine the architectural details and craftsmanship at your own pace.
The main staircase is notably wide and functions both as steps and as seating during traditional performances held in the house. This dual purpose reflects how the original residents used space flexibly for different activities.
