Vijfheerenlanden spans 153 square kilometers between the Lek River in the north and the Linge River in the south, encompassing three cities and fifteen residential areas.
The region obtained its name in 1284 when five lords from Arkel, Ter Leede, Hagestein, Everdingen, and Vianen collaborated to prevent water damage from Gelderse Betuwe.
The local dialect, Vijfheerenlands, belongs to the Utrechts-Alblasserwaards language group and remains an important part of regional identity among residents.
The municipality connects to major transport routes including highways A2, A15, and A27, with regional bus stations in Vianen providing public transportation links.
The municipality contains three nitrogen-sensitive Natura 2000 areas: Uiterwaarden Lek, Zouweboezem, and Lingegebied, requiring specific environmental protection measures.
