Norwegian University of Life Sciences, university
The Norwegian University of Life Sciences, also known as NMBU, is a university in Ås Municipality, south of Oslo, focused on agricultural science, biology, and environmental studies. The campus combines older stone buildings with newer glass structures, set among open fields, tree lines, and experimental gardens.
The institution was founded in 1859 as an agricultural college, making it one of the first of its kind in northern Europe. Over time it expanded its range of subjects, and in 2014 it merged with another Oslo-based college to become a full university.
The university is known in Norwegian as NMBU, short for Norges miljø- og biovitenskapelige universitet. On campus, students can often be seen working outdoors in fields and gardens, which gives the place a hands-on feel that sets it apart from a typical city university.
The campus is located in Ås and is reachable by train from Oslo in about 30 minutes. A visit works best in spring or summer, when the outdoor gardens and fields are easy to walk through and explore.
The campus holds one of Norway's oldest botanical collections, originally planted to support agricultural research in the 19th century. Parts of this collection are open to the public and can be seen while walking around the grounds.
