Ghandruk is a mountain village at approximately 1940 meters elevation with stone pathways connecting traditional stone houses topped with slate roofs. The settlement forms a compact network of narrow routes with the Annapurna range framing the landscape behind the buildings.
The settlement emerged as an important center for the Gurung people, who established trade routes through the Himalaya between Tibet and lower regions of Nepal. This location made it a significant junction for goods movement and cultural exchange across mountain passes.
The Gurung Cultural Museum displays traditional clothing, farming tools, and household items that reflect centuries of local customs. Visitors can see how people lived and worked in this mountain setting, with objects showing the connection between the community and the land around them.
The village is reachable from Pokhara by taxi to Nayapul, a journey of about one hour, followed by approximately four hours of uphill walking through terraced fields. The paths are steep and require good stamina, so plan with enough time and suitable footwear in mind.
The village maintains active honey hunting traditions, where skilled collectors harvest wild bee nests from cliff faces using traditional rope ladders. This practice is passed down through generations and represents a significant part of local livelihood and identity.
