Checua, Archaeological site in Nemocón, Colombia

Checua is an excavation site north of Nemocón that contains thousands of stone tools, bone artifacts, and human remains organized in distinct layers. The open area reveals multiple occupation levels, showing how people lived and left behind their daily objects across a long span of time.

The site was occupied between 8500 and 3000 years ago, making it one of the earliest human settlements in the Altiplano Cundiboyacense region. This long period of habitation shows that different communities returned to this location over thousands of years.

The artifacts found here show that early inhabitants created both practical tools and artistic objects like a bone flute. These discoveries reveal how people lived day-to-day and what kinds of creative skills they possessed.

The site sits about 7 kilometers north of Nemocón town center in an open setting that is easily accessible on foot. The highland location means the weather stays cool throughout the year, so bring a light jacket for your visit.

The excavations revealed four separate occupation zones with evidence of hunting white-tailed deer and guinea pigs for food. The tools and bone remains show that inhabitants also processed animal hides.
