Kohistan District, Administrative district in Hazara Division, Pakistan
Kohistan is a mountainous area in Hazara Division located between Gilgit-Baltistan and Mansehra District. The terrain rolls along the Indus River with steep slopes and deep valleys throughout the region.
The administrative area was created in 1976 through reorganization and was later divided into Upper and Lower Kohistan in 2014. This change came from the need to better manage administration in remote mountain regions.
People here speak Kohistani, a language deeply rooted in the mountain traditions of this region. You'll notice this distinct way of speaking sets the community apart from other areas of Pakistan.
The terrain is mountainous and difficult to access, so local guides and proper equipment are advisable for visits. The Indus River shapes the infrastructure, and Dasu serves as the main hub for basic services.
This mountain area is home to rare animals like the Western Tragopan pheasant and snow leopard. These species are found only in a few other highland ecosystems in the region.
