Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Station, Hydroelectric power station in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan.
The Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Station is an underground hydroelectric facility in Azad Kashmir with four turbines that harness water through an extensive tunnel system. The structure stands about 60 meters tall and diverts water from the Neelum River through twin tunnels to discharge into the Jhelum River.
Construction of the facility started in 2008 and finished in 2018 with support from a Chinese consortium. The project emerged from efforts to expand energy infrastructure across the region.
The station powers homes across northern Pakistan and represents a major infrastructure achievement for the region's development.
The facility sits in remote mountainous terrain in Azad Kashmir and is not designed for public visits. Visitors should check with local authorities beforehand, as the area has limited facilities and infrastructure.
The station operates with an underground powerhouse buried deep below the surface that protects equipment from weather and natural hazards. This hidden design sets it apart from typical hydroelectric plants found elsewhere.
