Osiedle Słoneczne, Residential district in Nowa Huta, Kraków, Poland
Osiedle Słoneczne is a residential district in Nowa Huta comprised of 13 buildings that depart from typical socialist planning layouts. The buildings are interspersed with streets and green spaces, with ground floors containing shops and service establishments accessible from sidewalks and arcades.
The district was constructed between 1951 and 1954 under the direction of architect Stanisław Juchnowicz with supervision from Tadeusz Ptaszycki. This period marked new approaches to residential planning in the post-war years.
The buildings show a departure from socialist realism through their minimalist style and lack of ornamental details. This approach reflects a deliberate choice to prioritize functional forms over decorative elements.
The area is easy to explore on foot since shops and services are directly accessible from sidewalks and through arcades in the building protruding sections. The arrangement of buildings allows you to navigate the different parts of the district quickly.
The first building stands seven stories tall and was designed by a collaborative team of architects and designers. This structure demonstrates how multiple perspectives were brought together in shaping early residential construction.
