Parque de Santa Cruz, Public garden in Sé Nova, Coimbra, Portugal
Parque de Santa Cruz is a public garden in central Coimbra, laid out across several terraced levels connected by stone staircases. Paths, fountains, and water basins run through the grounds, which are listed as Immovable Cultural Heritage of Public Interest.
The Augustinian Canons received this land in 1131 and established the Quinta de Santa Cruz as an estate. During the 18th century, the grounds were gradually opened and transformed into a public walking park for the city.
The three sculptures at the Praça da República entrance represent Faith, Hope, and Charity, giving the entry a ceremonial feel. Just beyond them, the Fountain of Nogueira with its triton figure marks the passage into the green part of the grounds.
The main entrance is on the Praça da República, but several other access points allow you to pass through the park on your way into the city center. Since the grounds slope across levels, sturdy footwear is useful, especially on the stone staircases.
The park contains tree species that most visitors walk past without noticing, such as White Cedar, Himalayan Cedar, and Norfolk Pine. These trees shelter black-capped warblers and robins, making the garden a spot of surprising variety in the middle of the city.
