Gabroveni Inn

Gabroveni Inn stands on Lipscani Street as a rectangular structure with multiple stories displaying traditional Romanian architectural elements. The building shows the typical layout of merchant courtyards from that era with interior spaces and solid masonry walls.

Founded in 1818, this lodging evolved from merchant accommodation into a hotel called Gabroveni-Universal in the early 20th century. This transformation reflected the economic changes and growing tourism demands in Bucharest during that period.

The building takes its name from Bulgarian merchants of Gabrovo who stayed and did business here regularly. Visitors can still see the rooms that once housed traveling traders.

Located in Bucharest's historic center, the building now functions as a cultural venue hosting art exhibitions and performances. Visitors should explore the narrow streets of the old quarter and allow time to walk around the surrounding historic buildings.

Unlike other historic inns in Bucharest from that period, this building was constructed without an accompanying chapel. This made it unusual among the merchant courtyards of the old center, as many similar buildings included religious spaces.
