Old St. George Church

Old St. George Church is a Romanian Orthodox church building in central Bucharest with a large narthex and three entrance doors on its facade. The western side features two towers with pilasters decorated with Neo-Corinthian capitals, incorporating design elements from the Brâncovenesc period of Romanian architecture.

The original church was established before the 16th century, with archaeological findings indicating a foundation from the 15th century beneath the current structure. The building was later reconstructed and reshaped with architectural elements from the Brâncovenesc period.

The wooden iconostasis displays Ukrainian Baroque style elements, which show how Eastern influences shaped local artistic traditions. This blend of styles inside the church reflects the cultural connections that developed over centuries in this region.

The church is located approximately 400 meters south of New Saint George Church and is surrounded by residential buildings and local shops for easy navigation. Access on foot is straightforward through the central streets where the building is visible from the outside.

The tomb of Constantin Brancoveanu rests inside this church, alongside relics of Saint Nicholas and other significant figures from Romanian history. This collection of burial sites makes the location important for those interested in exploring local history.
