Sakha

The Republic of Sakha spans over 3 million square kilometers, making it the largest administrative region in Russia with mountains, tundra, and taiga.

The territory gained republic status in September 1990 after centuries of indigenous settlements and Russian exploration that began in the 17th century.

The Sakha people maintain their traditional Turkic language and celebrate the summer solstice festival Ysyakh with ceremonial dances and communal feasts.

The region contains major diamond deposits, producing 25 percent of global supply through mines operated in extreme subarctic climate conditions.

In Oymyakon, temperatures drop to minus 71.2 degrees Celsius, establishing this settlement as the coldest inhabited location in the Northern Hemisphere.
