Lensk, Administrative center in Sakha Republic, Russia.
Lensk is a city along the Lena River banks in Sakha Republic, situated at 180 meters elevation. The settlement includes an airport and river port that serve local transportation and trade.
The settlement was founded in 1663 by Russian fur traders and was initially named Mukhtuy. In 1963, it received its current name because of its location on the Lena River.
The local history museum displays objects from the Evenk people, the indigenous group of this region. The original settlement name Mukhtuy comes from their language and means great water.
The airport links the city regularly to Mirny, Yakutsk, and Irkutsk through scheduled flights. The river port handles cargo loading and unloading for shipments moving along the Lena.
A karst cave system lies about 7 kilometers southwest of the city. Underground chambers contain a waterfall and a lake in natural formations.
