Yagodnoye, Urban settlement in Magadan Oblast, Russia
Yagodnoye is an urban settlement on the left bank of the Debin River, situated near the Chersky Range in Magadan Oblast. The place contains administrative buildings and residential structures, with gold mining serving as the main economic activity.
The settlement was founded in 1934 during construction of the Kolyma Highway as a transport hub. It later served as the administrative center for the Sevlag labor camp from 1949 to 1957.
The name comes from the Russian word for berries, referencing the wild berries that grow near the Yagodny stream in this region. You can still see this natural growth around the settlement today.
The settlement is roughly 550 kilometers from Magadan by road and accessible by car. Visitors should prepare for harsh weather and limited services, which are typical for settlements in this remote region.
After the Soviet Union's collapse, the settlement lost half its population, showing how political change affected remote mining communities. This shift continues to shape the character and size of the place today.
