The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin features thirteen towers connected by massive brick walls stretching two kilometers along the banks of the Volga River.
Construction of this military fortification began in 1500 with the Ivanovskaya Tower, replacing a wooden structure that burned down during the early sixteenth century.
The Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel within the Kremlin holds the tomb of Kuzma Minin, a merchant who helped defend Moscow in 1612.
Visitors can walk the complete perimeter of the fortress walls, accessing observation points that provide views across the Volga and Oka rivers.
During World War II, the Kremlin towers served as air defense positions, with anti-aircraft guns mounted on their rooftops to protect against German attacks.
