Gornaya Karusel, Ski resort in Sochi, Russia.
Gornaya Karusel is a ski resort in the Krasnaya Polyana mountains above Sochi, Russia, with runs spread across several elevations. A system of gondolas and chairlifts links the different sections, from the valley base up to the higher slopes.
The resort was heavily developed in the years leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, when new lifts, runs and facilities were built. After the games ended, it continued to operate as a public winter sports destination.
On the slopes, visitors encounter skiers from across Russia and from abroad, which gives the place an open and mixed feel. The restaurants and lodges at the base reflect a Russian mountain style, with hearty food and a relaxed après-ski tone.
The resort serves skiers and snowboarders of all levels, with equipment rental and lessons available on site. Weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends and public holidays, so visiting mid-week is a good way to avoid longer lift queues.
The resort sits only a short drive from the Black Sea coast, making it one of the few places in the world where skiing in the morning and reaching a beach in the afternoon is possible on the same day. In late spring, snow can still cover the upper runs while the lower valleys are already green.
