Victory Monument, War memorial on Poklonnaya Hill, Moscow, Russia
Victory Monument is an obelisk on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow, Russia, rising to 141.8 meters (465 feet). The structure is made of steel, bronze, and concrete, and carries a bronze figure of the goddess Nike with two accompanying angels at the top.
The first proposals for this memorial emerged in the 1940s, but construction only started in 1993. The completion took place in time for Victory Day 1995.
The name refers to the Red Army's victory over Germany and forms part of a larger complex where visitors walk through broad avenues and fountains. Families and school groups come here regularly to attend memorial ceremonies and parades.
The site is open around the clock, with no entry charge and direct access from Park Pobedy metro station in western Moscow. The plaza and surrounding paths suit quiet walks, whether during daylight in summer or at dusk.
Every centimeter corresponds to a day of the war between 1941 and 1945, making the total height a deliberate symbol. This makes it the tallest war memorial in Russia.
