Свободненская детская железная дорога, railway line in Russia
The Svobodnensky Children's Railway is a rail line in the city of Svobodny in Amur region designed for young learners to gain railway experience. The track spans more than 11 kilometers, passes through multiple communities, features metal bridges and modern signaling systems, and operates with four locomotives and several train cars.
The railway opened in 1940 as a short 4 kilometer educational track and served children's learning for many years. During wartime it transported more than 26,000 tons of cargo, expanded to over 11 kilometers by 1951, received modern safety systems in 1970, underwent complete renovation in 2012, and was renamed in 2021 to honor a prominent transportation minister.
The railway honors a notable Russian transportation minister and reflects the local tradition of railway education for young people. Visitors can observe children actively learning about train operations and gaining hands-on experience with rail systems.
The railway operates from June through August and welcomes school groups and individual visitors for tours and hands-on train operation experience. Plan to spend a few hours exploring the track, visiting stations, and learning about train management, while enjoying well-maintained grounds and safe conditions.
During wartime the railway transformed into a vital supply line, proving its usefulness far beyond its original educational purpose and demonstrating resilience during challenging times. This dual role as both learning center and practical transport system sets this facility apart from other children's railways in Russia.
