Yanbu, Industrial port city in western Saudi Arabia
Yanbu is a large city on the western coast of Saudi Arabia facing the Red Sea, managed by the Royal Commission for Jubail & Yanbu. The city stretches along a wide coastal strip and combines port facilities, residential neighborhoods, and expansive industrial zones.
The city began around 2,500 years ago as a trading center on the spice and incense route between Yemen and Egypt. Centuries later, industrial development transformed the historic port into one of the largest oil shipping complexes on the Red Sea.
The three districts of Yanbu - Al-Bahr, Al-Nakhl, and Al-Sina'iya - each maintain different functions ranging from residential zones to industrial sectors.
King Fahd Industrial Port is the largest oil shipping facility on the Red Sea and shapes the entire coastline of the city. Visitors can orient themselves along the clearly separated districts, with industrial areas set apart from public spaces.
The city exports over 80 percent of its production, mainly liquid fuels and petrochemicals. These exports contribute nearly 40 percent of the regional gross domestic product.
