Wadi al-Qura is a valley north of Medina with fertile soil and numerous water springs. The terrain spreads across a wide area with many settlements scattered throughout the fertile region.
The valley became a settlement area because of water sources that made life in the desert possible. From the 9th century onward it became one of Arabia's most populated regions with many agricultural villages.
The valley is home to several ancient settlements whose inhabitants developed sophisticated water management systems. The underground channels built here show great craftsmanship and adaptation to desert conditions.
The region is reachable by road connections from Medina and lies in the north of the country. Visitors should prepare for hot desert conditions and allow enough time to explore the scattered settlements.
The region contains about 80 natural springs that have supported settlement and farming since ancient times. This exceptional abundance of water in a desert region made the valley a populated and productive area.
