Dhahran Al Janub, human settlement in Saudi Arabia
Dhahran Al Janub is a city in the Dhahran Al Janub governorate in southern Saudi Arabia, close to the border with Yemen. It sits in the foothills of the Asir mountains and contains residential quarters, markets, and administrative buildings.
The city grew as an administrative center for the southern border area of Saudi Arabia, a region that has been home to Asiri tribes for centuries. In the 20th century, it was formally incorporated into the administrative structure of the kingdom.
Dhahran Al Janub sits within the Asir region, known for its own musical traditions and style of dress distinct from other parts of Saudi Arabia. Local markets carry handmade textiles and spices that are tied specifically to this highland area.
The city is best reached by car, as public transport in this part of the country is limited. Visiting during the day is a good idea, since markets and shops tend to be open and easier to navigate then.
Despite being close to the Yemeni border, the city maintains an everyday pace and is often used as a starting point for trips into the Asir highlands. The surrounding terrain, with its terraced hillsides, looks very different from most of Saudi Arabia.
