Harrat al Birk

Harrat al Birk is a volcanic field along the Red Sea coast featuring dark lava flows and numerous fissure vents scattered across the terrain. The black rocky surface extends broadly across the area, creating a barren and jagged landscape with minimal plant growth.

These volcanic formations originated millions of years ago and represent some of the older geological structures on the Arabian Peninsula. They document a prolonged period of volcanic activity that fundamentally shaped the region.

Local inhabitants of the Al Birk region have incorporated the volcanic terrain into their traditional narratives about the formation of their homeland.

Reaching this place requires a sturdy vehicle and guidance from someone familiar with the terrain, as marked paths and visitor facilities are absent. The black surface becomes extremely hot, and shade or water sources are scarce nearby.
