El-Obeid is a major city situated on a sandy plateau at approximately 570 meters elevation in North Kordofan. A surrounding forest reserve helps reduce dust storms and frames the landscape around this settlement.
The city was founded in 1821 by Egyptian authorities and grew into a major regional center. After destruction by Mahdist forces in 1882, it was rebuilt in 1899 under Anglo-Egyptian control.
