Royal Institute of Technology, Technical university in Stockholm, Sweden
The Royal Institute of Technology is a technical university in Stockholm, Sweden, with five academic schools spread across several campuses, including the main site in Östermalm. Other locations include Kista, Flemingsberg, and Södertälje, each hosting dedicated facilities for research and teaching.
The institution was founded in 1827 as Teknologiska institutet and grew out of the Mekaniska skolan from 1798. Its roots reach back to the Laboratorium mechanicum, which Christopher Polhem established in 1697.
The name Vetenskap och konst brings together science and art, showing how technical training in Sweden connects practical skills with theoretical knowledge. Students and teachers apply this philosophy daily in laboratories and workshops, where projects address both dimensions.
The offer includes more than 60 master's programs with courses taught in English, making technical education accessible to international applicants. The different sites are reachable by public transport, so the campus you visit depends on your chosen field of study.
Beneath the campus, the R1 nuclear reactor was built during the 1950s and operated until 1970. This reactor was Sweden's first dedicated to academic research and enabled experiments in nuclear physics directly at the institution.
