Östermalm city district, Residential district in central Stockholm, Sweden.
Östermalm is a residential district in central Stockholm that stretches from Sveavägen to Valhallavägen, including multiple neighborhoods. The area contains Gärdet, Norra Djurgårdsstaden, and Hjorthagen, each with distinct streetscapes and building styles.
The area was originally known as Ladugårdslandet in the 1600s and served as royal pasture land for livestock. During the major urban development of the 1880s, the farmland transformed into a modern residential neighborhood.
The name comes from a royal sheep pasture that once existed here in the 1600s, before the land became a fashionable residential area with grand streets. You can sense this transformation by looking at the buildings and how people use the different neighborhoods today.
The Östermalmshallen Market Hall has been a shopping destination since the late 1800s, offering fresh seafood, vegetables, meat, and cheese. The district is walkable and allows you to move between different neighborhoods at your own pace.
The 1912 Olympic Stadium still operates regularly today, making it the oldest functioning Olympic venue anywhere. Many people do not realize that this historic building continues hosting events rather than serving as a museum piece.
