Opone

Opone was an ancient trading port on the Somali coast that drew ships from different regions. The natural harbor provided shelter from storms and allowed merchants to load and unload goods safely.

The port grew as a center for trade in frankincense, spices, tortoise shells, and ivory destined for the Mediterranean and Egypt. Its peak came during the first centuries after Christ, when merchants regularly used this route.

The settlement served as a meeting point where traders from Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean exchanged goods and ideas. People here benefited from connections to distant markets and the goods that arrived by sea.

The site lies on the coast and is difficult to reach today due to its remote location. Visitors should be prepared for basic conditions and travel with local guides who know the way.

Archaeological findings show that this port traded with merchants from Indonesia, revealing how far these ancient sea routes extended. Such distant connections highlight the global reach of ancient commerce.
