Guéra Region, Administrative region in central Chad
Guéra Region spans across central Chad and features mountainous terrain with several important highland ranges including the Kadam Massif and Guéra Massif. The landscape shows a mix of plateaus and valleys, with Mongo serving as the main administrative and commercial hub.
This administrative division was created in 2002 when it separated from the former Guéra prefecture, followed by governance restructuring in 2003. The reorganization established decentralized management under appointed administrators.
Multiple ethnic groups including Arab Baggara herders and Hadjarai peoples inhabit the region, each maintaining their own languages and cultural practices. The local markets and community gatherings in towns show how daily life revolves around trade and social connection.
Visitors can use Mongo as a main access point where administrative centers and trade markets are concentrated, helpful for navigating the region. Travel during the drier season is advisable, and the mountainous terrain can affect travel times and routes.
Half of Zakouma National Park lies within this region, making it a crucial refuge for wildlife in the Sahel zone. The park offers opportunities to see elephant herds and other large animals roaming in their natural habitat.
