Chari-Baguirmi Region, Administrative region in central Chad
Chari-Baguirmi is a region in central Chad where the Chari River flows through the western and southern areas, supporting farming and fishing. The landscape includes flat plains and scattered settlements connected by roads that vary in condition.
The region developed from the former Sultanate of Bagirmi, which ruled from its capital at Massenya between the late 15th and 19th centuries. This historical kingdom shaped the territory and influenced the settlement patterns that exist today.
The people here belong to different ethnic groups including Chadian Arabs, Bagirmi, Fula, Gadang, Kanuri, and Kwang communities, each with their own ways of living. These populations shape how daily life and local traditions work across the region.
The main towns like Massenya, Bousso, Dourbali, and Mandélia are linked by roads, but these can become difficult to travel during heavy rains. Planning visits around the dry season helps avoid road problems and makes getting around easier.
The region contains areas called 'Women's Land' where queens held power and made decisions in past times. These places keep traces of a female-led system that was unusual for this part of Africa.
