Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, Autonomous region in eastern Tajikistan.

The region spans across 45 percent of Tajikistan's territory within the Pamir Mountains, containing numerous valleys, glaciers, and peaks reaching extreme altitudes.

The territory became an autonomous oblast in 1929 during Soviet rule, establishing administrative structures and development programs focused on education and infrastructure.

The population of 226,900 residents includes Pamiri people who speak distinct languages and practice Ismaili Shi'ism, setting them apart from other Tajik communities.

The Pamir Highway, connecting Khorog to Osh and Dushanbe, serves as the main transportation route but faces frequent closures due to severe weather conditions.

The region maintains informal governance structures where local leaders often function independently from central authority, creating a parallel administrative system.
