Murghob District, Administrative district in Gorno-Badakhshan, Tajikistan
Murghob District encompasses 37,300 square kilometers of mountainous terrain within the Pamir Mountains, bordering Kyrgyzstan, China, and Afghanistan.
The district developed from a Russian military outpost established in 1893, serving as a strategic point along ancient trade routes through Central Asia.
The district population of 15,900 residents includes 80 percent Kyrgyz people and 20 percent Pamiris, maintaining traditional nomadic practices and herding traditions.
The Pamir Highway traverses through the district, connecting the region to Kyrgyzstan in the north and the regional capital Khorugh in the southwest.
The district contains several mountain lakes, including Karakul Lake, Sarez Lake, Yashil Kul, and Zorkul, surrounded by peaks reaching extreme altitudes.
