Murghob District, Administrative district in Gorno-Badakhshan, Tajikistan

Murghob District is an administrative division in Gorno-Badakhshan located within the Pamir Mountains, bordering three countries: Kyrgyzstan, China, and Afghanistan. The terrain consists of high-altitude mountain plateaus, deep valleys, and numerous passes that shape the landscape.

The district originated from a Russian military outpost established in 1893, which served as a strategic location along ancient trade routes crossing Central Asia. This early settlement became the foundation for the modern administrative structure of the region.

The district population of 15,900 residents includes 80 percent Kyrgyz people and 20 percent Pamiris, maintaining traditional nomadic practices and herding traditions.

The Pamir Highway connects the district to the regional center of Khorugh in the southwest and to Kyrgyzstan in the north, serving as the main transport link. Access is most reliable during warmer months when mountain conditions permit easier travel through the high passes.

The district contains several mountain lakes, including Karakul Lake, Sarez Lake, Yashil Kul, and Zorkul, surrounded by peaks reaching extreme altitudes.
