Themiscyra

Themiscyra was an ancient Greek settlement on the southern Black Sea coast near the mouth of the Terme River in northeastern Anatolia. The site lies close to present-day Terme in Samsun Province.

The settlement began as a trading hub that connected different civilizations through maritime routes. Later it became the scene of military conflict, particularly during the Third Mithridatic War.

The place is known in ancient texts as the home of the Amazons, warrior women who lived and fought on their own terms. This legendary connection continues to shape how people understand and imagine this location.

The site is located in a coastal region with moderate climate and is accessible from the modern town of Terme. Visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes, as exploring the archaeological remains is done on foot.

During a siege by Roman forces in the Third Mithridatic War, defenders used wild animals and beehives as weapons against their attackers. This unusual defensive tactic appears in historical accounts of the conflict.
