Kırklareli Province, Province in northwestern Turkey
Kırklareli Province is an area in northwestern Turkey situated between the Black Sea coast and the Yıldız Mountains, with Bulgaria as its northern neighbor. The region contains dense forests in its northern sections and agricultural lands toward the south.
The region's name comes from Saranta Ekklisies or Kırk Kilise, meaning forty churches that stood before Ottoman forces took control in 1363. This conquest marked the beginning of centuries of Ottoman rule in the area.
The Hızır Bey Külliye complex shows early Ottoman building methods through its mosque, bath, and bazaar arranged together. Visitors can see how these spaces served both spiritual and daily community needs in medieval times.
The region is best explored by visiting both its northern forested areas and southern agricultural zones to see different landscapes. Local infrastructure allows travelers to move between these distinct areas and observe the everyday economic activities that define each zone.
Near Sarpdere village lies Dupnisa Cave, a vast network of chambers that holds traces of ancient religious practices within its formations. Visitors can walk through layers of natural history spanning millions of years within a single space.
