Ortaköy, Coastal neighborhood in Beşiktaş, Turkey.
Ortaköy is a coastal neighborhood on the European side of the Bosphorus, with the Neo-Baroque mosque prominently positioned at the water's edge. The area has narrow streets lined with shops, cafes, and galleries that open onto the shore and create a lively waterfront.
The area began as a fishing village during the Byzantine period called Agios Fokas, later named Mesachorion meaning Middle Village. Over centuries it grew into a port and residential area that attracted different populations and communities.
The neighborhood shows its multicultural past through a synagogue, Greek Orthodox church, and mosque that sit near each other along the shore. Walking through the streets, you can see how different communities have lived side by side for generations.
The neighborhood is easily connected by ferry to other parts of Istanbul and works well for a half-day visit. The many cafes and restaurants line the narrow streets, making it pleasant to explore on foot.
Street vendors throughout the area make kumpir, a local specialty of baked potatoes topped with various ingredients using time-honored recipes. You will find these popular snacks at stalls along the streets and waterfront.
