Feriye Palace, Ottoman palace complex in Ortaköy, Turkey
Feriye Palace is a palace complex situated along the Bosporus shore between Beşiktaş and Ortaköy, comprising several buildings positioned directly at the water's edge. The structures display traditional Ottoman architecture with detailed facades and characteristic design elements.
The palace was constructed as a secondary residence for the Ottoman ruling family and took its name 'Feriye' from this purpose. After Sultan Abdülaziz's fall from power in 1876, he was brought to this complex, where he died shortly thereafter.
The palace grounds now house educational institutions where students and faculty move through the historic spaces every day. These buildings have become centers of learning rather than seats of power, transforming their role in the city's life.
A restored section of the palace now operates as a restaurant and is accessible daily for visitors who make a reservation beforehand. The grounds sit directly at the waterfront, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for slippery surfaces when wet.
The buildings were designed by the renowned Balyan family, a dynastic group of architects who created many significant Ottoman structures. Their distinctive approach is visible in the refined details and thoughtful layout throughout the complex.
