Dicle Dam, Embankment dam and hydroelectric power station in Diyarbakır Province, Turkey
Dicle Dam is a concrete arch structure that stretches 307 meters across a valley in southeastern Turkey within the Eğil district. It functions simultaneously as a hydroelectric facility with modern turbine technology for power generation.
Construction of the facility began in 1986 as part of a major regional development initiative and was completed in 1997. Its creation was part of a broader effort that included the building of multiple similar structures across the area.
The name of the dam refers to the Tigris, whose waters form here through the convergence of several tributary streams. This waterway has shaped settlement and development across the region for thousands of years.
Water levels vary by season and operational needs through storage and release cycles. The best time to visit is during months with more stable water levels, and visitors should check on accessibility to viewpoints beforehand.
Since 2001, a water treatment facility has supplied drinking water to a large portion of Diyarbakır city. This dual-purpose function makes the structure more than just a source of energy for the local population.
