Görele, District administrative center in Giresun Province, Turkey
Görele is a district administrative center on the Black Sea coast between Giresun and Trabzon, stretching along the coastal highway with mountains rising inland. The town sits at an important junction where the coastal road connects settlements in the region, serving as a local hub for commerce and services.
The settlement originated from the ancient city of Coralla and later became a Genoese trading post before being captured by Sultan Mehmet II in 1461. This conquest marked a turning point that brought the region under Ottoman control and influence.
The town has maintained its own kemençe music tradition, a regional style that remains part of local cultural life. This musical heritage reflects the identity of the Black Sea region and continues to be performed at community gatherings.
The town is easily reached via the coastal highway that naturally connects settlements in the region, making orientation straightforward. The local economy experiences peak activity during late summer leading up to the harvest season, which shapes the rhythm and atmosphere of the place at different times of year.
During World War I, the town experienced occupation by Russian forces for two years, a period that few visitors know about. This brief episode left marks on local memory and adds another layer to understanding the place's recent past.
