Altındere Valley National Park

Altındere Valley National Park is a protected forest area in the Black Sea region featuring steep valleys, natural springs, and marked walking routes. The landscape shows dense woodland on mountain slopes with waterfalls and rocky formations visible along the established paths.

The Sumela Monastery was founded in the 4th century and reflects the Christian presence in this mountain region over many centuries. The national park itself was established in 1987 to protect this combination of natural forest and cultural heritage.

The Sumela Monastery sits embedded in the valley's rock face and holds deep meaning for pilgrims and visitors who journey here for spiritual reasons. Its presence shapes how people experience the natural landscape today, as many come to honor both the sacred site and the forest that surrounds it.

The best way to experience the park is on foot from the access point, as vehicles cannot enter the interior. The paths can be slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear and time for walking uphill are important considerations.

The waterfalls throughout the park are fed by numerous mountain springs and create some of the most striking natural features of the valley. These flowing waters create an impression along the path to the monastery that often surprises visitors.
