Taipei Main Station, Central railway station in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan
Taipei Main Station is an underground central railway hub in Zhongzheng that brings together multiple forms of transit under one roof, covering six above-ground and four below-ground levels. The complex links platforms, ticket counters, and waiting areas through wide corridors filled with shops, restaurants, and traveler service facilities.
The first railway station was built here in the late 19th century as part of the line connecting northern and southern regions of the island. The current underground facility was completed in the late 1980s, replacing the earlier above-ground structure entirely.
The main hall serves as a gathering space where travelers and locals sit on the open floor to wait, rest, or meet friends between journeys. This informal use of the central area reflects how public transit spaces can also function as community meeting points in daily life.
The different transit systems are marked with signs and floor arrows, but navigating the sprawling underground levels can take some time on a first visit. Travelers making connections should allow extra buffer time, as some passages between lines involve several minutes of walking.
A small rooftop garden on the top floor often goes unnoticed by visitors, even though it offers a quiet retreat from the crowds below. This area is open during the day and provides a brief escape into greenery within the busy transit hub.
