Taiping Island Airport, Airport located on Taiping Island, ROC
Taiping Island Airport is a military airfield on a small coral island in the South China Sea, part of the Spratly Islands and under Taiwan's control. It has a concrete runway equipped with night landing lights, alongside support buildings and radio navigation aids.
Taiwan took control of the island in the 1950s and gradually built up the military infrastructure, including the airfield. The runway and support facilities were developed over decades to strengthen the outpost's operational capacity.
For the small garrison stationed on the island, the arrival of a supply flight is one of the few regular breaks in a routine of isolation. The airfield acts as the main link between the outpost and the rest of Taiwan.
Access to the airfield is strictly military and not open to the general public. Weather in the South China Sea can change rapidly, which sometimes delays flights and supply runs to the island.
Taiping Island is one of the few natural islands in the Spratly group large enough to support a runway without land reclamation. This sets it apart from many other military outposts in the area, which were built on artificial reefs.
